Thrifting: How this trend is great for the planet!

Looking for some new clothes? But also want to help save the planet? Why not try thrifting!

Who among us didn't love the thrill of discovering a hidden treasure at a thrift store? Many people today who still have a passion for fashion gives their old clothes new life while making new discoveries. Thus, the “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” saying is very much truthful.

Growing up in Baguio, my aunt always asks me to accompany her to go "ukay-ukay" in the nearby town. We usually spend around 5 hours just digging up those pile of clothes, fleeing from different stores to another, looking for gems that perfectly fits her. That time, I was only 12 years old and I just stayed beside her or if I got lucky, I get to sit in a chair inside the store. I didn't really enjoy those times not until I grew up and started working. Now, I usually buy my clothes in the thrift store. Not only is it cheap but it is also fun because you have no idea what you will find, which makes it more exciting. Besides, finding great clothes for lesser price is a great way to dress.

What I love about thrifting is that there are endless fashion possibilities, but it is also another way to take care of Mother Earth. By thrifting we can reduce our carbon footprint, thereby reducing the impact on our climate. Given that thrifting is fun, it is also a way to repurpose or even recycle clothing and helps preserve scarce resources by preventing them from entering landfills and creating environmental damage. In a similar sense, thrifting also helps preserve water. Clothing production is a process that takes up a lot of time and energy, thus also using a lot of water. I feel like a lot of people are into thrifting these days, and I think that it’s great because thrifting not only saves money but also saves the future generations.

To everyone who’s into sustainability and loves fashion at the same time, this is for you! Now is the time to join the sustainable fashion movement. Just shop vintage, used, and previously owned outfits. Change begins with a single thrift. Start today and help mother earth!
